How To Save Money On Grocery Shopping Without Price Matching At Walmart
Let me walk you through how I’ve been shopping and give you a few tips to help you continue to save some BIG money on groceries without shopping at Walmart.

Let’s get started…here are 5 tips to help you save $$ without price matching.
1. Shop individual stores with the best deals
Shopping at different stores will help you take advantage of the different stores’ best deals and still save you money. Yes, it might take a little more time, but it will save you $100’s!
Before you choose a store to shop at, login to the website to know which store(s) have the best deals in your area (red deals are the ones that are LESS than Costco and Walmart). Focus on these red deals to save you 30-75% off regular priced items.
For example, today I logged into Deals to Meals and noticed that my local Smiths and Sprouts had the best grocery prices for the items I needed. I ran into both of these stores and it didn’t take any longer than price matching would have. Focus on those stores that are close together and not far from your home.
Each week there will probably only be 2-3 stores that have the majority of the items you need for your meal planner. But honestly, I try to shop at just one location as much as possible, which you can certainly do too.
Select the store(s) you want to shop at in your local community. They are the most thorough online grocery shopping website on the web. Even more well known sites like Emeals don’t cover the entire U.S. For most areas, they have 10-24 local grocery stores listed (most online websites only offer a few).
Don’t forget it’s okay to shop at big-box stores like Costco or Sam’s Club. They do have the lowest prices on several staple items like flour, spices, sugar, yeast, lettuce, mushrooms, spinach, certain frozen foods, etc.
2. Watch for great deals on produce and meat
Produce and meat are the most expensive part of your grocery budget. Focus your shopping trips on these items. For example, Smiths had strawberries, green onions, carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes and pineapple on sale for a great price.
I bought these items along with tortillas, pork and a few other items they had that I needed. Sprouts had chicken and other produce items on sale so I stocked up on those.
3. Have a well stocked pantry and food storage
Stock up on sale items to save you from having to buy items when they are not on sale. As you stock up a little each week, you will find your own ‘store’ will begin to grow in your pantry/food storage. Case lot time is a great time to stock up on all of the best deals that can be stored long term.
This stocking up method also goes for meat and dairy items. On the Deals to Meals list, watch for those items with a gold star which means they are an extra good deal. These items are worth driving a few extra miles for, and buying as many of them as you can afford. A well stocked food storage and pantry will make meal planning SO much easier as well.
4. Use the Deals to Meals Meal Planner to save you time and money
Shopping with a plan will save you the most money each week. Before I shop, I like to know which stores I am going to, which items I need to buy, and what meals I will be making that week.
Using the weekly meal planner you will have delicious recipe options you can serve your family based around the week’s deals. Click on the recipes you wish to make (or create your own meal planner) and then link the ingredients to the weekly deals.
For ease, they also prepare a grocery list you can quickly print and take to any store to help make shopping easier. You will also have access to thousands of our tried and true recipes. Create your own meal planner, or use theirs. It’s up to you!
5. Grocery shop for a 10-14 day period
Since Walmart’s price matching policy has changed, and shopping is no longer as convenient, you will want to shop fewer times a month. The good news is, the fewer times you shop at the grocery store, the less money you’ll spend –yay!
Try and do all of your shopping in one day so you get to relax the next couple weeks and not have to worry about shopping again for last minute items you need. If you shop using the meal planner, those recipes should last you 1 ½-2 weeks and should help you shop less and save more money!
You Don’t Have To Price Match To Still Save
- Pick the store(s) you want to shop at, or that have the best ‘red’ and ‘starred’ deals on the list.
- Focus on your produce and meat sales.
- Stock up on fantastic deals so your pantry is always full.
- Create your meal plan with recipes right from what is already on sale that week.
- Don’t shop more than three times a month.
