10 Healthy Lifestyle Habits To Ensure Success

It seems that we all believe successful people must have some sort of secret or hack that makes them successful.  Or why else wouldn’t everyone be at the same level?

Truth is, there ARE a number of things many of the most successful people have in common.  There are things they do in order to maintain such a level of consistent achievement.

Habits To Ensure Success

They’re no secret at all.  It’s just that successful people have the grit and determination to keep at it.  So what are the lifestyle habits that successful people have in common?

I’d like to suggest these ten:

  • getting up early
  • exercising
  • meditating
  • reflecting
  • goal setting
  • planning
  • reading
  • creating
  • fueling your brain
  • never quitting

And like the rest of us, you likely already knew these things.  However, if you’ve been doing them in your own life, why don’t you consider yourself successful?

Let’s dig into each of these individually and you may find some insight as to where you are yourself on your path to success.

Getting Up Early

Now this first habit is not necessarily a favorite of most.  And I totally get it.  Getting up early, especially in the dark of winter is not a favorite for me all of the time.

Maybe you don’t need to worry about getting up early because your kids are grown and capable, or you have plenty of time throughout the day already to work on your dreams.  That’s awesome!

But I can tell you that since I started getting up early and making that a priority, I have been able to find more and more success with the efforts in my life.  You can control what happens first thing each day and that become very powerful in steering you toward the direction you want to take.

Ask any successful person and I guarantee that they have some sort of a morning routine or ritual that really sets the foundation for their day.

I even recommend this quick and simple course called Make Over Your Mornings that can help you tailor your needs for better mornings.  Ask any successful person and I guarantee that they have some sort of a morning routine or ritual that really sets the foundation for their day.

Exercising

Do I really need to emphasize this one?  You know how good exercise is for you.  Maybe it’s time to step back and ask yourself why your exercise isn’t up to par where you’d like it to be.

You don’t have to go to the gym or invest in a personal trainer to get the benefits of exercise.  You can do everything right at home without a personal gym.  It just takes a little bit of effort and a desire to fuel you on to keep going.

Exercise helps you to:

  • clear your head when you’re focused on a big project
  • release endorphins to keep you energized
  • decrease your stress and frustration
  • lower anxiety and depression levels
  • spawn new ideas by utilizing the strength of your body

I highly recommend a crossfit approach that focuses on strength training.  Cardio is great, but it’s amazing how much better you can feel when you start becoming stronger all throughout your body.  Just touching on each area of your body will help create a balance that is unsurpassed.

Meditating

It’s not all woo-hoo and just a mindless practice to encourage laziness.  Meditation is an excellent skill that takes time to master.  And the benefits of meditation are great beyond what you would think.  Here’s what Oprah said once about her meditation practice:

“I walked away feeling fuller than when I’d come in. Full of hope, a sense of contentment, and deep joy. Knowing for sure that even in the daily craziness that bombards us from every direction, there is — still — the constancy of stillness. Only from that space can you create your best work and your best life.”  – Oprah Winfrey

I recently started having meditation in my morning routine.  It was a rocky start for sure, but I find immense benefit that I wish I had had many years ago.  When you meditate you:

  • train your mind to be calm and clear
  • become more mindful about your body and emotions
  • create intense awareness about your mental state
  • allow the clouds to part on your stress
  • decrease your anxiety and depressive tendencies
  • increase the ability to stay focused and uncluttered
  • nurture a better environment for the intentions in your life

And you don’t have to worry about getting it right from the very beginning.  That’s quite impossible, really.  Keeping at it for at least a month or so will show you the progress you’ve made.

But you can simply start.  Here’s a quick tutorial on how you can get started with meditation.  I encourage you to do it as often as you can—daily, if possible.

Reflecting

After you meditate, it’s an excellent time to also reflect on aspects of your life.  Using mental imagery and awareness about where you are, where you want to be, and how to get there is very beneficial.  It starts laying down the cards for your life.

You can also journal your impressions, thoughts, and feelings as desired.  Putting things to paper also submits your desires and aspirations to the universe so much that the stars start to align for you.

Here’s a simple process you can take.

  1. Think about the goals that you have in each aspect of your life.
  2. Picture how it will feel once you have achieved them.
  3. Now focus on what you need to do to get to those goals.
  4. Write down the steps you’re going to take and what you’re going to do to keep your determination in check.
  5. Refer to this list often when you’re discouraged.

I never knew how important it was to also reflect on the actions we must take in order to get to that reality we desire.  So many people just wish and dream for some false future, then never outline the actions it must take to get there.  This is a mistake.

Make sure that on a regular basis, weekly or monthly, you’re reviewing where you are, where you’re going, and how you’re going to get there.

Goal Setting

Gone are the young teenage days of flying by the seat of your pants.  Putting some effort out there without establishing goals in the hopes that it just might work never amounts to positive results.  Even if you feel that having goals is taboo because they never work for you, then you may be doing something wrong.

I don’t care if you want to worry about having them by SMART goals or not.  What I think matters the most about setting goals is that you:

  • set them in all areas of your life so you have balance
  • continually review them and have them handy
  • stick through the end no matter how long it takes to reach them
  • share them with an accountability partner or family
  • have a reward once they’re achieved

That’s it.  If you don’t have goals in your life that aren’t written down, then how do you know where you’re going in life?  If you want to create the path of your success, you must have goals in order to get there.

Share your goals here with me.  I would love to be an accountability partner if you need one!

Planning

Now that you’ve set some goals and written them down, being able to plan things out will get you to that reality you have been reflecting on.  It’s tedious and seems like way to much work, but it’s essential.

Would you rather wake up each day not knowing exactly how to get somewhere or do something?  Or would you rather have step by step actions to take in a determined way that you KNOW will get you to your end goal?

I prefer the latter, definitely.

  1. Decide on a specific time each week, month, and year when you will plan out everything necessary to reach your goals.
  2. Write down every step you need to take in order to get there, brainstorming often.
  3. If you don’t know what step to take, schedule time to research and learn what you do need to do.
  4. Use awesome tools like Asana and Airtable to keep everything straight.

It’s so nice when I can get to work each day and just look at my task list and I know exactly what to do already.  Because it’s been predetermined and planned out.  You won’t have to waste time figuring things out over and over and over again.

Reading

There is always someone who is more experienced in what you’re trying to become successful at.  There are always more materials out there on the topics that matter most to you.

Continual education about running your business, bettering your health, or developing your strengths is very valuable.  I don’t know about you, but I LOVE reading and continually learning.  Even attending events like seminars and conferences is very enjoyable for me.  Why?

Because I get to LEARN.

You can develop new ideas and explore unlimited possibilities for yourself when you keep reading and learning.  You can teach yourself new approaches or tactics.  You can learn from the mistakes and lessons of experts in their particular fields.

But you can also take time to read enjoyable things like fiction in order to give the left side of your brain a break. 🙂

If finding the time to sit down and actually open up a book is taxing on your schedule, listen to audiobooks through fantastic services like Audible.  I even would include listening to podcasts in this area because it works much the same way.

Creating

Unfortunately, there is much humdrum to life and you have to take care of the baseline essentials so that the world doesn’t fall apart.  But once those maintenance activities are through how are you spending the rest of your time?

Creating new things is a big key to becoming successful.  All those people you look up to did not become successful overnight or just get lucky.  They took the continuous steps every single day to create.  I love how the Compound Effect brings a realization to this fact about many aspects in our lives.

You’re blessed with gifts talents that no other human being can use in your unique way.  Use them to create something that will better help the world.  Whether it be a blog, a handmade item, teaches other through words and materials, you can always be creating something.

Successful people set time aside to create on a regular basis.

It’s also much more satisfying and appealing to see the results of your efforts when you can actually point to something and say, “I made that.”  Successful people set time aside to create on a regular basis.  It will spawn bigger and better ideas too.

Fueling Your Brain

All of these habits may seem to take a ton of effort, and they sure do.  So how can you even attempt to create success in your life with all that you want to do without continually exhausting your mental capacity?

I learned recently that you burn glucose in your brain when you do things like think and make decisions.  The processes your mind goes through have to have sufficient energy to even happen.  I bet you’ve have days with the brain fog, mental fatigue, and even stressful irritation about things that don’t really matter in the first place.

It’s because you’re not fueling your brain in a way to keep it sustained.  Essential parts of your diet will directly affect how your brain is supported.  After going through minor bouts of anxiety, depression, and extreme irritation in the past few years, I’ve learned many things that I wish I had known earlier.

  • pack in the protein to at least 60+ grams per day from lean meats
  • have vegetables at every meal in colorful varieties
  • make sure you have plenty of healthy fats
  • take B12, vitamin D, and omega-3 supplements

I also take Acuity from Melaleuca and I’ve noticed a big difference in how my mind is able to keep going, even when I haven’t been the best with my diet.

Your brain needs ALL of these things in order to work well.  If you suffer from any of the symptoms I already mentioned, it’s likely because you are missing one of these things.  Change it up and see the improvement in your mind.

Successful people fuel their mind in powerful ways so they can ensure being on top of their game in order to make things happen.

Never Quitting

Do you know someone that gave up on something because it didn’t go as well as planned?  Have you seen someone far surpass you in life and you wonder why they’re so lucky?  It’s all about the decisions those individuals made.

The former chose to stop trying, while the latter chose to keep going.  It’s super hard when something doesn’t work out as you planned.  It’s frustrating when there are hiccups and issues that interrupt that smooth reality you envisioned before.

But that’s why you sat down and reflected on your path and planned for what may possibly happen.  It’s for times like these that this mental strength you’ve established is really put to work.

When I say never quitting, I mean never giving up.  Sure, you may need to quit on the things that are holding you back.  You may have to quit allowing bad habits and tendencies rule your life.

It’s by not giving up on your goals and dreams that truly gets you there.  Successful people don’t become successes overnight.  It’s because they keep at, keep going, keep pushing and never give up.

Be the ant and refuse to be stopped.

My motto is “Be the ant and refuse to be stopped.”  That’s how successful people are made.  They don’t quit.

Habits Take Time

It won’t all be unicorns and rainbows when you start out with these new successful habits.  It takes time to see fruit from your efforts.  It takes even LONGER time for others to see it.

But keep at, use resources that will help you, and make things happen.  I really like this workbook from Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People too.

You’ll get there.  I will too.  Take it one day at a time and remember that ultimately the measure of your success is what you give it.  You determine that, not the world.

What habit do you have that contributes to your successful life?
